Meta’s family of apps, including Facebook and Instagram, experienced a significant outage on Wednesday, leaving many users unable to access the services.

The disruption began around 9:57 a.m. PST and impacted core Meta platforms such as Threads, WhatsApp, and Messenger, as reported by Downdetector, an internet-monitoring service.

At the peak of the outage, approximately 100,000 users reported issues with Facebook at 10:11 a.m. PST, according to Downdetector.

Meta acknowledged the issue in a post on X, stating, “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”

A separate statement on X from Instagram also confirmed the outage, noting that “a technical issue” was affecting some users’ access to the platform.

As the day progressed, Meta updated users on its progress, stating in an afternoon X post, “We’re 99% of the way there — just doing some last checks.”

Shortly after, Instagram announced the resolution of its service issues in a lighthearted post on X: “Andddd we’re back — sorry for the wait, and thanks for bearing with us.”

This is not the first time Meta’s apps have experienced widespread disruptions. In March 2024, a similar outage occurred, coinciding with Super Tuesday during the U.S. presidential primaries. That incident also lasted approximately two hours, affecting users across multiple platforms.
