Luigi Mangione Retains Former Manhattan Prosecutor to Defend Him in UnitedHealthcare CEO Slaying

Luigi Mangione, charged in the high-profile murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has enlisted Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a distinguished former Manhattan prosecutor, as his defense attorney. The announcement came from Agnifilo Intrater LLP, her law firm, in a statement issued late Friday.

Friedman Agnifilo’s extensive career in law includes serving as the Chief Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan from 2014 to 2021 under DA Cyrus Vance. Her biography highlights her leadership in prosecuting high-profile violent crime cases, particularly those involving complex homicides and mental health issues.

“Karen Friedman Agnifilo brings three decades of experience in criminal justice, litigation, and trials,” her biography notes. “Her practice focuses on criminal defense in state and federal courts, drawing from her vast expertise in handling serious violent crimes from investigation to trial.”

A Reputation for Legal Excellence

While at the Manhattan DA’s office, Friedman Agnifilo spearheaded initiatives to create specialized units, including the Human Trafficking Unit, Hate Crimes Unit, and Manhattan’s first Mental Health Court. These accomplishments demonstrate her ability to navigate complex legal issues, a skill likely to be pivotal in defending Mangione.

Outside the courtroom, Friedman Agnifilo has made a name as a legal analyst for CNN and as a regular commentator on emerging legal topics. She also co-hosts a weekly podcast on the Meidas Touch Network, attracting over half a million listeners per episode.

The Case Against Mangione

Mangione, 26, was apprehended earlier this week in Pennsylvania and now faces charges in the Healthcare CEO's Killing: Luigi Mangione Faces Murder Charge. Authorities claim Mangione’s writings reveal a growing fixation on UnitedHealthcare and its executives, allegedly culminating in the murder of Thompson.

Law enforcement sources report that Mangione’s seized notebooks detail his grievances with the U.S. healthcare system, including claims that it is expensive yet ineffective. One entry described UnitedHealthcare executives as "parasites" profiting from a broken system.

The writings allegedly document Mangione’s increasing isolation and mental deterioration, with some entries outlining plans for violence. One particularly chilling note reportedly read, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.”

Legal and Public Scrutiny

Currently held in a Pennsylvania state prison without bail, Mangione awaits trial as details surrounding the case continue to emerge. UnitedHealth Group has called Thompson “one of the good guys,” underscoring the loss felt by the company and its employees.

As the defense prepares its case, Karen Friedman Agnifilo’s experience and legal strategy will be critical in shaping the outcome of this high-stakes trial. The case has already captivated national attention, ensuring that both the prosecution and defense will face intense scrutiny.
