OpenAI confirmed in an early Thursday post on X that its popular ChatGPT assistant, Sora video generator, and programming interface for developers are now fully operational after hours of downtime.
ChatGPT has gained significant traction, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reporting on December 4 that the company’s technology now serves 300 million active users weekly. On Wednesday, Apple released updated software for iPhones, iPads, and Macs that includes integrations with ChatGPT.
According to OpenAI’s status page, the ChatGPT outage lasted just over four hours, following a similar incident in June when the service was down for over five hours.
OpenAI reached a valuation of $157 billion during a funding round in October, with participation from key investors, including Microsoft and chipmaker Nvidia. The company's rapid rise began with the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, which has since become one of the biggest stories in the tech industry.
On Monday, OpenAI announced the release of Sora to users in the U.S. and many other countries. However, on Tuesday, Altman acknowledged the overwhelming demand for Sora, stating on X that “we significantly underestimated demand” and that it would take time to provide full access.
