The Franklin Fire in Malibu continues to expand, impacting over 20,000 residents and leaving at least seven structures in ruins.

The Franklin Fire in Malibu grew Tuesday evening, scorching over 2,800 acres and destroying at least seven structures, according to Los Angeles County officials. Fire Chief Anthony Marrone reported that aerial images revealed significant damage, with at least seven structures destroyed and eight others damaged. A more precise assessment will be conducted Wednesday as damage inspection teams begin their survey.

Over 1,500 firefighters are battling the blaze, while the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has launched 32 operations, including evacuations, road closures, and security patrols in the affected areas, according to Captain Jennifer Seetoo. “Fire can be extremely unpredictable, and we strongly encourage residents to be prepared, have a plan, and follow evacuation warnings and orders,” Seetoo advised. Around 20,000 residents are currently under evacuation orders or warnings.

To support displaced residents, shelters have been set up, including the Santa Monica Unified School District facility at 2828 4th Street in Santa Monica and the Calabasas Community Center at 27040 Malibu Hills Road in Calabasas. Deputies are also providing security patrols in evacuated neighborhoods. “We will not tolerate anyone attempting to exploit this community during such a vulnerable time,” Seetoo stated.

Governor Gavin Newsom has authorized FEMA assistance for the impacted neighborhoods, according to Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, whose district includes Malibu.
